character experience
You come to alone, and other than a repeating video on a large, cracked screen (someone wasn't happy) and a half empty wall of communication devices, some of which don't work, the room is empty. At one point there were plants, and some kind of soothing fountain to offer tranquility, but the plants are dead and the fountain has long since dried up.
The arrival video flickers in and out under the dusty, cracked glass.
Its background is the arrival room, but in considerably better condition. Well lit. Clean. The fountain burbling gently against the wall.
A tall man in a crisp navy-blue uniform stands exactly where you're standing right now, hands clasped in front of himself. His voice is deep, soothing, and friendly. Because he looks and sounds like Idris Elba. You're welcome.
"First off, and on behalf of everyone in Anchor, I would like to offer my deepest apologies. Please don't be alarmed by the secured portal room. The doors will open as soon as this recording is complete. Due to the unexpected nature of your arrival, we find it's safer for everyone to be briefed before we welcome you into the community.
"And let me make this clear. You are welcome."
As the video plays, scenes of the planet's surface play across the monitor. Harsh landscapes, sandstorms with lightning in their depths. His voice continues, warm and calm.
"Everyone in Anchor arrived the same way you have. Some under less than fortunate circumstances. Before the portal was built, people used to arrive all over the planet. Some died immediately, exposed to the elements without adequate protection, and others... Well, it's been a few years since anyone's had to worry about it."
The images of the planet's surface transition to overhead views of the colony, lush and green under its protective dome. It tours the upper levels, the small forests and fields lit by sunlight simulators. Cattle and crops thriving. It transitions to the biolabs, their researchers hard at work blending DNA and growing animals in test tubes. From there, people at different research stations, computers, seemingly endless variations on the investigative theme.
"No one knows why we're here, or how. This facility was created by the Anchored who came before us, and has evolved over the years to both research the phenomenon and provide safe harbor to those who are caught in its grip."
Families and individuals walk through the park at the base of the colony, while fish jump from its lake and into the air.
"People are trying to reverses engineer the portal to allow it to send people out and home, but they haven’t fully realized the technology yet. Until then people survive. Thrive. Try to make Anchor the best colony it can be. Some of us have even started families here."
From the smile on his face as he reappears, proud and a little bashful, it’s clear he’s one of those people.
"Please grab a communication device from the wall beside you, and I'll walk you through how to navigate your new home."
▶ After the video plays characters must go through decontamination to enter the facility, for the first time. In the decontamination area, characters are instructed by a friendly voice to strip and place any clothes and equipment into a processor that will remove any harmful substances and radiation. After a refreshing communal shower, they will be allowed to retrieve any belongings deemed clean or salvageable. All unsalvageable items will be purged.
