applications.

Applications are currently: OPEN.

As of April 2021, Redshift is a sandbox game! We still have apps for some degree of quality control, but the form has been simplified to streamline the process for new players. Here's how it works:

▶ New Players joining us after April 2021 will need to submit an application for their first character coming into the game by using the appropriate form below. This is so we know who you are, and so we can make sure your character will be a good fit for our players!
▶ Returning/Current Players who have been with us since before April 2021 or are coming back to us only need to claim their character using the form below to bring in new characters. New players may do the same after two months.

Application Guide.

▶ Submission Format: All applications must be posted to this entry, and must fit within one comment with a subject line in the format of "CHARACTER NAME | CANON | RESERVED/NOT RESERVED." While applications should not be linked in the entry, players may link to an alternate source such as a wiki for the character's history and powers; for original characters, the world history may also be linked from an alternate source such as an entry on the character journal.

▶ Accepted Character Types: Fandom Characters, Original Characters; CRAU is welcome and encouraged. Please see the Rules & Game Standards page for more in-depth explanations of appable, non-appable, and case-by-case characters.

▶ Application Verdicts: Applications will receive a verdict of ACCEPTED, REVISIONS, or DECLINED. Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod team. Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.

▶ App Challenges & Reserves: Redshift will not have application challenges, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in by the end of the application cycle. Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis.

▶ Character Limits: Players may have a maximum of 3 characters in the game; the option to increase the number of character spaces may become available at a later date. A player may submit up to two applications at a time.

▶ Samples: Linked samples should be from a publicly accessible source, and no more than 1 year old. Screencaps or transcripts from locked sources are not acceptable as samples, unless the character is being apped as a CRAU from a locked game, and in these cases permission from the other participant(s) in the thread must be obtained and submitted as screencaps along with the sample. All samples should represent the character as they are being applied for; for example, samples cannot come from an AU setting or break the fourth wall (Dear Player, etc.) As long as they meet this criteria, samples from other games, museboxes, memes, other websites (Tumblr, Insanejournal, etc.) or any other source are acceptable. For CRAU samples a link from the character's original game would be preferable, in the form of a link to their tag on the relevant communities, or specific thread links.

Submit an Application.

To submit an application or claim a character, please fill out the information in the appropriate text box below, and paste it in a single comment in response to this entry. Applications should not be linked, though portions of them may be if a bulky history or world section would put them over the character limit for one comment.

Character.

Name: Dave Strider
Canon: Homestuck
Canon Point: GAME OVER. Almost everyone in Dave's canon just died.
CRAU Timeline/Game(s): 3 years.
Soulgemmed: A magical girl game that had everyone trapped within a stepfordian town where negative emotions were purged via fighting Nightmares. Death was commonplace in this world.
Mobius: A virtual paradise that kept its inhabitants happy by wiping them of their memories so that they believe they've always lived there and replacing them with new memories of an ideal life.
Sphere: Weird underwater dome where characters' memories and nightmares were shared over the network.

Character History: wiki.
CRAU History: He did some worldhopping, died a lot, and then eventually got brainwashed and sent into a virtual utopia powered by music. Upon realizing the world that he was in was fake, he was offered the chance to side with the Musicians and help maintain the illusion by collecting energy via emotions and keeping the populace brainwashed with the use of music. This is something he chose because he believed it to be the kinder option; many of the inhabitants of the utopia had come from cruel, unrelenting worlds. In taking this option, he abandoned many parts of his own past, choosing to wipe them from his mind.

When Dave was taken to the Sphere, he adjusted incredibly poorly and was unable to cope with being taken away from an environment where he could have essentially anything he yearned for. To make matters worse, his older brother showed up, and Dave found himself living together with him again. The two had a tense living arrangement that kept Dave on his toes at all times.

Personality:
Loyal: Once you've earned Dave's trust, it's incredibly difficult to get him to turn his back on you. In fact, he's so loyal that it sort of turns into a fault, as it canonically leads him to defend people not worth defending and end up in some pretty toxic relationships that he should've cut off.
Self-sacrificing: Dave will literally die for his friends, and as Knight of Time, his role largely was to die for his friends repeatedly as he tried to pave a successful path for them. This is to the point where he gets into an argument with his sister because she insists on going on a suicide mission, and he insists that he'd rather die than see her die.
Smart: Dave's a quick thinker, and this is most blatantly seen in his conversations with his friends. He can banter with the best of them and rap freestyle when challenged to a rap battle. His intelligence also let him successfully exploit the game mechanics of Sburb in order to become filthy rich.
Self-aware: One of the hallmarks of a Derse dreamer. Dave is very cognizant of his faults and thoughtful with his actions.
Empathetic: According to supplementary material, this is one of the reasons the game assigned Time as his role. This is contrary to Dave's image, since he was raised to be cool and impassive; to never let emotion show on his face. However, at his core, he's a softie who finds it hard to not feel strongly for the people around him.
Driven: As the supplementary material puts it, "If you need a miracle, [Time players] are who you call." Dave works his ass off to achieve his goal, pushing himself beyond his limits when faced with insurmountable tasks.
Self-destructive: As mentioned above, Dave is very aware of his faults and too willing to sacrifice himself for his loved ones. Combine the two, and Dave tends to get caught up with the why and the how for justifying removing himself from the equation. He's a little too familiar with his mind and eager to explore its darkest recesses.
Cagey: Much of Dave's personality is built on control, and much of that control has to do with his persona and how people perceive him. As a result, he tends to keep strangers at arm's length.
Insecure: This ties into his obsession with his image as a cool, unflappable guy. It's an image that's impossible to actually live up to, and as a result, he always feels inadequate. This is in large part due to his upbringing; his brother was obsessed with forging him into a hero - a hard manly man the likes of which would make John Wayne look like the world's biggest nancy. In his attempt to be what his brother wished him to be, he's largely repressed his real self. Living life as a fake isn't easy.
Validation-starved: One more thing about Dave's upbringing is that it wasn't exactly healthy or affectionate. All he had for a guardian was a fight-happy brother figure, and said brother wasn't exactly the kind to give Dave praise or affection because that's not a thing that cool dudes do. As a result, Dave grew up without any of the love that a normal child with a normal upbringing would have gotten, and he's quite starved for it. He can find himself getting easily attached to people who show him validation as a result, which can lead to problems if said people aren't exactly good influences.

CRAU Development: Mostly, Dave has died a lot and witnessed the deaths and disappearances of a lot of his friends. He's become a lot more antisocial as a result, unwilling to allow anyone in because he doesn't think there's any point when it'll just end in him (or the other party) getting hurt. While in Mobius, he was also recruited to the Musician faction, which produces music to keep the inhabitants happy and forcibly brainwashes dissidents. Due to Dave's past experiences (his own world ending in his friends all dying, Soulgemmed having regular deaths as well as people succumbing to despair and turning into witches), he believed it would be better for everyone to live in a fake lie than face an unrelenting truth.

Dave was something of a big celebrity in Mobius as a result, which led to him fronting a lot more and being even more dishonest about his feelings and true self. He's more preoccupied with keeping up a false persona than ever before, both in order to live up to the expectations of his fans and because he's forgotten much of his past.

A few months into his stay at the Sphere, the Sphere broadcasted a memory of Dave being forced to brainwash one of his friends. This led to an uncomfortable conversation with his brother where Dave awkwardly tried to avoid revealing anything of substance and, as a result, told his brother he didn't need friends. His brother validated him for his reply, leading Dave to be more set than ever in isolating himself from forming any real relationships.

Powers/Abilities: Mobius didn't let him retain any of his Knight of Time abilities, so at a glance, he's just a well-trained fighter who can flashstep and happens to be really handy with a sword. However, the game did reward him for his position as Musician by giving him the ability to summon a sword at will, as well as manifest mild time-altering powers such as the ability to slow down a target or rewind the last five seconds of combat to, say, undo a fatal mistake. Such abilities take a huge toll on him and are powered by emotions, which in-game he harvested through the music he produced - by garnering a fanbase, he'd collect the emotions of the people who listened to his songs. As such, he's able to weaponize emotions and turn them into energy for himself. But once he depletes that resource, he's pretty much stuck swinging a sword.

His sword has unique properties, though, as a result of the whole "from a virtual paradise powered by emotions and music" thing. He has a Musician theme that evokes feelings of self-destruction, loneliness, and inadequacy, and while he cannot fatally injure anyone with his sword, his attacks mentally assail his opponents.

Inventory: Just his phone. There's nothing notable on it other than his collection of music.

Anything Else? His background deals with themes of child abuse, internalized homophobia, and suicidal ideation. Brainwashing, too, thanks to his CRAU background. I'll content warn for these as they come up.
